Modern Wedding Calligraphy

A contemporary calligraphic practice can be defined as “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner”. Wedding calligraphy adds such a sophisticated, elegant and personal touch on your wedding day, from welcome signage, invitation suite to sitting charts, table number sign etc, you name it. Today, I’d love to introduce Ariel, the owner of Sweetly Signed, who specializes in using wedding calligraphy to create wedding signages with such a beautiful and magical touch that I’m so admire of.

Sweetly Signed creates bespoke hand lettered designs and specializes in wedding signs, based in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and hand lettered by Ariel with precision and attention to detail.

Here are a few things you should know if you are considering adding custom wedding calligraphy for your wedding day.

When should you start thinking about wedding calligraphy items? (signs and decor)

The best time to book is anywhere from 4-8 month out. At this point you should have all your other major vendors booked and have a good idea of the items that you’ll need for signage to compliment your vision. Also, if you have your eyes set on specific rental pieces, they are reserved on a first come first serve basis. Booking less than 4 weeks out will result in a rush fee and there is no guarantee your date or rental items will be available.

How long is the rental period and how does pick up or delivery work?

If you choose to pick up your rental pieces, the rental period is about 4-5 days. Pick up and return are to me in Londonderry, NH. You may also choose to have your rental items delivered and set up at your venue. I deliver within 50 miles of Londonderry, which includes Boston. This is based on my availability and travel/delivery fees apply.

What are the most requested items with wedding calligraphy?

Each piece is totally customized and I can letter on just about any surface. With this being said the most requested items are seating charts or escort cards, welcome signs, unplugged ceremony signs, table numbers, social media/hashtag signs and bar signs/signature drinks. These personalized decor items are what tie your vision together and gracefully transition your guests between the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. This is your opportunity to communicate important details to your guests.

How far in advance do you need my final guest list?

I require your final guest list three weeks out along with verbiage for your other signs. It is best to set you RSVP date for at least 5-6 weeks out. This will give you time to track down the stragglers and organize your seating plan.

What are your favorite wedding calligraphy items to create?

I absolutely love seating charts. There is something so satisfying about seeing such a large piece finished and I think your guests will agree too! Seating charts require a lot of prep work including precise measurements and calculations. Often the prep work takes longer than the actual lettering. But when it’s all said and done, they truly are a statement piece and worth the hard work. My other favorite item to work on is bridal jackets. Whether it’s showing off your new name, a fun saying or meaningful quote, it so special to see a bride wearing my design. I feel so honored that you want to wear my work on one of the most important days of your life.
